We are happy to announce the Inaugural Cantonese Arts and Culture Funding Opportunity. Through the generosity of UCLA alumna, May Chong (class of 1979), an endowment was established to provide funding opportunities for projects that preserve and promote Cantonese traditions, arts, and language and to foster education and cultural exchange and community engagement for future generations.
UCLA student organizations may apply for up to $1,000 in funding for a student event, programming and/or activities. Limit 1 event per quarter per organization as funds are available. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Please allow 2-4 weeks for a decision to be made. Funding for faculty-initiated activities may be considered based on fund availability.
Proposals can be submitted using the Cantonese Arts and Culture Application Form.
Eligibility Requirements
These funds are open to all Registered Campus Organizations (RCOs) and official student governments (USAC/GSA). If funded, expenses must adhere to UCLA policies and procedures. Funding is for student activities and programs that benefit the campus community.
- Participation must be open to any interested UCLA student, without an admission fee
- No alcohol may be served at the program
- Program/event must be held on campus (limited exceptions may apply)
Examples of programs or services that would qualify as educational project and programmatic activities:
- Events or programs focused on Cantonese culture, language and/or history (e.g., workshops, conversation classes, cultural nights).
- Educational materials provided in a programmatic setting to develop skills necessary to learn about Cantonese culture or supplies necessary to support opportunities for cultural exchange, understanding, and appreciation.
- Honorarium for speakers with expertise in Cantonese language, arts, and traditions at on-campus events.
- Special cultural performances.
- Field trip admission fees (e.g. museums, cultural tours with historical society or community organizations) or conference registration fees that would provide information about Cantonese culture, language or history.
Funding can be used for food, facilities, speaker or performer honoraria/travel, admission/registration fees, supplies, and advertising. Funding will not cover student travel.
