Group photo of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center's founders, their families, alumni, former and current staff members, and student volunteers taken during the 50th Anniversary Founders Reunion event at James West Alumni Center, UCLA on Saturday, July 13, 2019.
On Saturday, July 13th, the Center hosted the Founders Reunion, which brought together many of the organizers, students, staff, and community supporters of AASC in the 60s and 70s. Guests reconnected, learned about AASC's current work, and joined the Center in reliving old memories, creating new ones, and imagining how to bring the Center into the future.
The Collective Memories Project video was shown during the Founders Reunion and features interviews from the UCLA Asian American Studies Center's founders, donors, and former staff, including former director Alan Nishio, founders and strong supporters Helen and Morgan Chu, former Gidra staff Carol Mochizuki, Samahang Pilipino co-founder Casimiro Tolentino, and Visual Communications co-founder Duane Kubo. They talk about their Asian American identity "a-ha" moments as well as the beginnings of the Center and its community ties. The video also features a montage of selected interviews from the Collective Memories Project.
