Census FAQs

How can I take the census?

You will receive mail from the Census Bureau with a link to take the census survey online, over the phone, or by mail. Those who do not have personal access to the internet yet want to take the survey online can access computers and census kiosks at their local public library, public recreation center, and other facilities. For non-English speaking respondents, the census can also be answered in multiple languages (13+) by phone.


What questions are asked on the census?

The census will ask questions regarding...

  1. Household Size
  2. Homeownership
  3. Phone Number
  4. Name (optional: can just input "Person 1", "Person 2" for name section)
  5. Sex
  6. Age and Date of Birth
  7. Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin
  8. Race
  9. Relationship to Household Members

When should I take the census by?

April 1st, 2020. Invitations to take the census will be sent between March 12-20. From March 30th to April 1st, the Census Bureau will be making active efforts to visit soup kitchens, shelters, and other outdoor locations to count those experiencing homelessness. On April 1st, every home should have received an invitation to participate in the census, and will complete responses online, by phone, or by mail. In April, census takers will visit colleges and others who live amongst a large group of people to conduct quality check interviews.

What happens if I decide not to participate in the census?

During May through July, census takers will be visiting homes that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census.
