They fled with their arms raised in front like ghosts. / 3,400m from the
hypocenter/At the foot of the Shinjo Bridge / Around 9 a.m. on August 6,
1945 / Masao Kobayashi (45 at the time of the bombing, 74 when he drew
this picture) / A labor unit suffering burns and hovering between life
and death followed the road to their homes. People were fleeing to the
suburbs. On the far riverbank people were seeking water. Many were
crawling into bamboo thickets having lost the strength to walk.
