Graduate Concentration in Asian American Studies at UCLA

The UCLA Department of Asian American Studies offers a Graduate Concentration in Asian
American Studies to allow graduate students enrolled in UCLA departments, programs and
professional schools to acquire expertise and a credential in Asian American Studies.
In conjunction with another graduate program, students must take four graduate and/or
upper division undergraduate course and submit an Asian American Studies-related major
research paper for approval by the Chair of the Graduate Committee of the Department.
These requirements for the Asian American Studies Graduate Concentration are in addition
to requirements of their primary program in their department or school, and should be
completed before advancing to candidacy. Upon completion of the requirements, the
Department of Asian American Studies will furnish each graduate concentrator with a
letter attesting to his or her basic competency in graduate work in Asian American
Studies.
Research Paper
Students submit an Asian American Studies-related research paper. This paper may have
been prepared in any graduate course (in Asian American Studies or the student's home
department, program, or school) but should reflect the concepts, theories, knowledge,
and/or methods used in Asian American Studies. The paper must be approved by a faculty
member designated by the Chair of the Graduate Committee of the Department of Asian
American Studies.
Admissions & Application Procedures
All graduate students in good standing enrolled in UCLA departments, programs and
professional schools are eligible. Admission is not competitive but space in courses may
be limited. Enrollment in each course is by instructor consent. To apply for the Graduate
