Objectives

The MRP's objectives for 2007-2008 are to:

  1. Organize four events addressing various topics concerning AAPIs and policy.
    • These events will bring together UC faculty and students, community leaders, and members of the California API Legislative Caucus to promote collaborative efforts in identifying and addressing emerging issues facing AAPI communities.
    • Two Southern California UC Campuses will host two of these events and two Northern California UC Campuses will host the other two events. Each host campus will seek co-sponsorship from other university units to expand collaborative networks of the MRP.

  2. Facilitate collaborative applied policy research that addresses AAPI issues and explores policy and legislative solutions.
    • The MRP will initiate the organizing of work groups consisting of affiliated faculty to address specific policy areas concerning AAPI populations. The workgroups will conduct community-based research in partnership with legislators to develop policy solutions for AAPI issues.
    • The MRP will continue the Small Grants Program, which will promote the dissemination of academic research on AAPIs through development of policy briefs that will increase research accessibility and application by policy makers.

  3. Enhance communication outlets in order to facilitate the dissemination of information among UC faculty and students, community leaders, and members of the California API Legislative Caucus.
    • The MRP will produce a bi-monthly newsletter, California AAPI Connections, which will publicize and communicate information regarding activities of the MRP and its affiliates.
    • The MRP will continue to develop its website as a resource for researchers, policy makers, and community leaders seeking expertise for various AAPI-related issues.

The MRP’s objectives for 2006-2007 are to:

  1. Conduct two, 2-day training workshops addressing the mechanics of applied AAPI policy research.
    • The training workshops will bring together UC faculty and students, community affiliates, and members of the Joint API Legislative Caucus to identify the most effective methods for implementing applied, community-based AAPI policy research.
    • A campus in Southern California will host one workshop, and a campus in Northern California will host the other workshop.  These hosts will seek co-sponsorship from other academic units.
  1. Complete a CPRC research project to identify emerging issues facing AAPI communities and potential collaborative policy research projects for the MRP to pursue (pending CPRC Graduate Policy Associate position funding).
  1. Pursue a concrete publication project.
    • A potential publication project is to update The State of Asian Pacific America: Policy Issues to the Year 2020, which was published in 1993.
    • Another potential publication project is a special issue of AAPI Nexus.
  1. Begin to develop and implement service-learning courses at several UC campuses to train students in AAPI policy research (pending federal Learn & Serve grant).
