Census Data and Highlights about the Asian American
and Pacific Islander Population

In October the U.S. Census Bureau officially designated the AASC as one of 60 new national Census Information Centers (CICs). The CIC program was started in 1988 to provide better access to data, research and various Census products to minority, immigrant and disadvantaged communities. CICs receive most Census Bureau products as well as technical support and equipment. In turn, they process data, compile statistics, create maps and make relevant information available to the communities they serve.

Nationally, twelve Asian Pacific American organizations were selected as CICs, including the Asian Pacific Islander Health Forum in San Francisco, the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia and the Organization of Chinese Americans in Washington D.C. In Los Angeles, Special Services for Groups, Inc and the Korean American Coalition were also selected as CICs.

The AASC CIC Project is a partnership between the Center and the National Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans for Community Development (CAPACD), a network of APA community-based organizations providing housing, employment, business and social services to low-income APA Communities. Besides providing the demographic, economic and geographic data needed by CAPACD's membership, plans for the CIC include developing regional maps and other data for use by local organizations, government agencies, advocates and researchers. Says Bill Watanabe, Executive Director of Little Tokyo Service Center and Board Member of CAPACD: "Being a CIC will allow us to generate the data we need to be effective advocates for the Asian and Pacific Islander community. The data will help us impact policy at both the local and national level."
