[Los Angeles, CA] – The UCLA Asian American Studies Center is co-sponsoring "Buildin' Bridges & Stirrin' Waters": Women of Color Feminism & Activism” on Thursday, November 5, 2009 from 5:30-7:30 at the UCLA Powell Library Rotunda, 2nd floor. The evening will highlight authors from the Amerasia Journal women’s issue entitled “Where Women Tell Stories,” and will encourage attendees to build bridges across communities for women of color and allies. The event will draw students, faculty, and community leaders together to hear from a panel of speakers that have a breadth of experience working across communities.
The keynote speaker is renowned educator and activist, Ericka Huggins, who was a former leader of the Black Panther Party. She was Director of the Oakland Community School from 1973-1981 and was the first Black and the first woman appointed to the Alameda County Board of Education. She is currently Professor of Women's Studies at California State University-East Bay. Ericka will talk about meeting famed human rights activist Yuri Kochiyama for the Amerasia women’s issue, where they engaged in a spirited conversation on the history of women of color activists that were "stirrin' the waters," and the importance of building bridges between communities of color. Yuri Kochiyama is the highly esteemed Asian American human rights activist, who has been a strong supporter of Malcolm X.
