"Faculty Diversity Initiative Unveiled by the Four Ethnic Studies Research Centers at UCLA"

On Tuesday, February 18, 2003, the Directors of the American Indian Studies Center, Asian American Studies Center, Chicano Studies Research Center, and the Ralph Bunche Center for African American Studies Center held a Town Hall meeting to discuss a Faculty Diversity Initiative that has been developed in consultation with faculty, staff, students, alumni, community leaders, and elected officials. The Initiative provides an innovative major response to the unprecedented demographic changes that have occurred in Los Angeles and in California, as well as the projected increases in undergraduate and graduate enrollments at UCLA in the coming years. The initiative recommends that the Chancellor's Office allocate 6 tenure-track faculty positions to each of the four ethnic studies research center, make a commitment to develop the strongest possible degree programs in African American Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, and Chicano Studies at UCLA, and provide needed resources to the newly created position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Diversity.
